Keys Spoil Warthogs' Return to Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - With Winston-Salem wearing Warthogs jerseys for the first time in BB&T Ballpark history, Frederick completed a three-game sweep with a 9-4 victory on Thursday night.

This Throwback Thursday was the first of three dates the Dash will honor their former moniker. Before the nickname change to the Dash in 2009, the Warthogs enjoyed a successful 14-year run in the Triad from 1995-2008.

Tied 4-4 in the seventh, Aderlin Rodriguez grounded an RBI single off Warthogs reliever Manny Martinez (1-2) to give the Keys a 5-4 lead. The next batter, Connor Bierfeldt, swatted a three-run home run to left to give Frederick (23-23) a commanding 8-4 edge. Martinez, who is the reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week, allowed four earned runs in two innings of work.

Aderlin Rodriguez put the exclamation point on the game with a solo shot to left off reliever Jacob Morris in the ninth, making it a 9-4 contest.

Winston-Salem (17-31) has now been swept three times at BB&T Ballpark this season after being swept only four times in the facility's existence entering this year.

The Warthogs struck first in the third inning. With a runner on first and two outs, Michael Suiter stroked a two-run shot just inside the left-field line to make it 2-0.

Frederick quickly responded in the fourth. Wynston Sawyer led off the frame and smacked a solo shot off Dash starter Brandon Brennan to quickly make it 2-1.

Three batters later, with one out and a runner on third, Jomar Reyes grounded an RBI single to tie the contest at two. The Keys would go ahead on a bases-loaded RBI single by Erick Salcedo and add their fourth tally on an RBI fielder's choice by Jay Gonzalez.

The right-hander would settle down, though, and give Winston-Salem a solid start. The 24-year-old went six innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs.

The Warthogs quickly tied the contest in the bottom of the frame against new reliever David Richardson (2-1). With runners on first and second and one out, Brett Austin lined an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-3. Later in the inning, with men at first and third, Richardson uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Toby Thomas to score and make it a 4-all contest.

Richardson would recover and throw four innings to pick up the win. Nonetheless, every batter in the Winston-Salem lineup had at least one knock. Keon Barnum, who went 1-for-4, has now hit safely in 15 of his first 18 games this season.

Winston-Salem hits the road for a four-game set against the Potomac Nationals, starting on Friday. The two teams split a four-game series at BB&T Ballpark from May 13-16. Winston-Salem sends Matt Cooper (2-3, 3.88 ERA) to the bump against Nationals right Greg Ross (1-2, 1.50 ERA). Cooper currently leads the Carolina League with 63 strikeouts.

#YourHomeTeam returns to BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday, June 1, for a seven-game homestand. Winston-Salem will play three against the Carolina Mudcats and then four against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. For your seats, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
