Frederick Keys News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - The Keys launched three home runs for the first time this season and utilized a pair of four-run innings to defeat Winston-Salem 9-4 Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Keys swept the three-game set from the Dash and even up their record for the first time since April 14.
Winston-Salem utilized its own power to score first against Keys lefty Trevor Belicek, who made his Keys and organizational debut. Acquired in the Brian Matusz trade on Monday, Belicek surrendered a two-run shot to Michael Suiter in the third for a 2-0 Dash lead.
Frederick would answer right back with four in the fourth against Brandon Brennan. Wynston Sawyer lifted the second pitch of the inning to left for his second home run of the year to cut the deficit in half. Aderlin Rodriguez doubled and four of the next five batters would reach. Jomar Reyes singled in Rodriguez, while Erick Salcedo drove home Reyes with a single. Up 3-2 at that point, Jay Gonzalez followed with an RBI fielder's choice to score Austin Wynns, who had singled in the inning.
The Dash knotted the game up in the home fourth against David Richardson, who relieved Belicek. The lefty tossed three innings, gave up five hits, two runs, and struck out two in a no-decision. Richardson (2-1) gave up two runs in the fourth to make it 4-4 on an RBI single by Brett Austin and wild pitch.
The teams traded blanks in the fifth and sixth innings before the Keys scored five unanswered. Guerrero lasted six innings, allowed four runs on seven hits. Manny Martinez entered in the seventh and walked Steve Wilkerson and Sawyer with one out. Rodriguez punched a ball through the right side to score Wilkerson for the game-winning run, and Conor Bierfeldt clubbed a three-run home run to left-center field to put the Keys on top 8-4.
Rodriguez would add his third hit of the game in the ninth, a solo dinger to left against Dash reliever Jacob Morris. The combination of Richardson and Jeff Beliveau, who tossed the final two innings, closed things out. The final 12 Dash batters were retired by the duo to complete the three-game sweep.
Frederick travels to Zebulon, NC to take on the Carolina Mudcats for a four-game series starting Friday night at 7 p.m. RHP Lucas Long (2-2, 3.41) starts for the Keys against Mudcats RHP Max Povse (3-2, 2.66). The broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
