May 26, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - Braxton Davidson was 2-for-4 with three RBI, Jordan Edgerton was 3-for-4 with two runs and Matt Withrow struck out eight over six innings pitched as the Mudcats avoided a series sweep with a 10-2 win against the Pelicans on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.
Davidson, Edgerton, Keith Curcio, Joey Meneses and Ryan Gebhardt each had at least two hits in the Carolina (18-27) home win against visiting Myrtle Beach (26-20). The Mudcats pounded out 14 hits in the game and scored at least 10 runs in a game for just the second time this season on Thursday night.
Withrow (2-4, 4.17) snapped both his own three game losing streak and Carolina's three game skid after earning the series finale victory. He retired the first nine consecutive batters to start the game and recorded five strikeouts over the first three innings before giving up two runs and two hits in the fourth. Withrow yielded just two hits overall and finished the start with three walks and matched a career high with eight strikeouts over six innings pitched.
The Mudcats spotted Withrow with a two run first after getting two against Pelicans starter Jeremy Null. Myrtle Beach later tied it with two in the fourth, but the Mudcats took the lead again in the sixth after scoring three runs against Null while forcing him out of the game.
Null gave up two runs in the first and three (two earned) in the sixth before leaving the game. In all, the Mudcats collected 10 hits against him and scored five times while taking a 5-2 lead in the game. Null went five and 2/3 innings and finished with a walk and a strikeout.
The Mudcats opened their half of the sixth with back-to-back singles from Meneses and Edgerton before Davidson came through with a RBI double (scoring Meneses) to right. Reed Harper kept the line moving by driving in Edgerton and Gebhardt finished the rally with a two-out RBI single to third (scoring Davidson).
The Mudcats scored three times on four hits in the sixth and then rallied for five runs and three hits in the seventh while taking a 10-2 lead in the game. Myrtle Beach reliever Daniel Lewis allowed all five runs and gave up four hits in all in his appearance. He originally relieved Null in the sixth and ended up working through a full inning in his Carolina League debut before leaving the game.
Curcio started the seventh with a double and later scored on a bases loaded single to center from Edgerton. Davidson then drove in one with a bases loaded single to right before Harper's bases loaded single to center. Tanner Murphy then drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Gebhardt later did the same to cap the inning.
Edgerton was 3-for-4 with two runs and drove in one for the Mudcats in the win. Davidson drove in a season high three and was 2-for-4 with two runs on Thursday. Harper was 1-for-2 with two RBI and Gebhardt was 2-for-3 with two batted in as well. Edgerton, Davidson, Harper and Gebhardt hit fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth respectively on Thursday night.
Withrow left after the sixth and reliever A.J. Minter and newly added Taylor Lewis followed out of the bullpen. Minter worked through an inning and 1/3 scoreless and Lewis pitched an inning and 2/3 without yielding a run.
The Mudcats were 7-for-15 in the victory and stranded eight men on base. They also scored at least 10 runs in a game for the first time since April 12 and scored 10 or more for the just the second time this season.
Carolina finished 1-2 in the three game series against the Pelicans and next continues the current seven game home stand with game one of four against the Frederick Keys on Friday night. RHP Max Povse (3-2, 2.86)
will start for the Mudcats on Friday night against Frederick's RHP Lucas Long (2-2, 3.41).
The current home stand continues with Friday Night Fireworks on Friday night and Souvenir T-Shirt Giveaway Night on Saturday, May 28.
