Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, Md. - A two-run Frederick lead evaporated in the eighth inning Monday night and the Keys fell 6-4 to Myrtle Beach. The loss was Frederick's second in a row and their ninth home loss in their last 12 contests at Harry Grove Stadium.
On a rehab assignment, Baltimore Orioles designated hitter Wilson Betemit went 1-for-5 with a single and two strikeouts in his first game with the Keys (20-28, 54-63). He's expected to play with the Keys tomorrow night as well. Betemit sprained his knee in spring training and has been on the disabled list since.
The Keys held a 3-1 lead entering the eighth inning Monday, but the Pelicans (29-20, 69-49) overcame their deficit three batters into the frame. Beginning his third inning of work after pitching two scoreless frames, Miguel Chalas allowed a leadoff triple Preston Beck, Jake Skole drove him home with a single to center and then Drew Robinson smacked a line-drive homer over the right field fence, putting Myrtle Beach ahead 4-3.
Chalas would escape the inning without allowing further damage, but Jesse Beal allowed two more runs in the eighth -- a leadoff homer to Odubel Herrera and an RBI double to Robinson -- and Frederick entered their final at-bat trailing 6-3.
Jason Esposito and Michael Mosby started the ninth with singles, putting runners on the corners with no outs against Michael Zouzalik, but Johnny Ruettiger grounded into a double play and Esposito stayed at third, unsure if the soft, sinking liner to second would be caught in the air.
Esposito scored on a passed ball, setting the final score, before Betemit grounded out to second to end game.
Chalas (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in three innings, striking out two and walking now. Cody Kendall (1-1) earned the win in relief for Myrtle Beach, entering with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth and pitching 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing just one inherited runner to score. Zouzalik, who allowed one unearned run, pitched the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
The Pelicans scored first Monday, after loading the bases with one out in the top of the third. Trever Adams hit a grounder to third but beat out the relay to first and avoided the double play, plating Skole.
The Keys then loaded the bases with one out an inning later and Tucker Nathans gave them the lead with a two-run single into the left field corner. Glynn Davis, who reached on an error, was thrown out at third on the play, but Jerome Pena and Travis Adair, who both singled, scored on the play to put Frederick ahead 2-1.
They Keys extended their lead to 3-1 when, again with the loaded the bases and one out, this time in the fifth, and Pena grounded into a force out at second but scored Mosby from third.
Myrtle Beach starter Nick McBride, making his first Carolina League start of the season, was pulled after the Keys loaded the bases in the fifth on a leadoff walk and a pair of singles. He allowed three runs, two earned and a walk while striking out three batters. McBride had started while with Double-A Frisco but was used as a reliever with Myrtle Beach before Monday's game.
Keys starter Trent Howard avoided trouble with exception of the bases-loaded jam in the third and threw five innings, allowed just a run, five hits, didn't issue a walk and struck out four. For the eleventh consecutive start, he received a no-decision.
Adair went 3-for-4 for the Keys and Nathans went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Frederick has 11 hits, all of which were singles, and left 18 on base. Myrtle Beach tallied 13 hits, led by Robinson's 4-for-5 performance. He doubled, homered for the sixth time this season, stole second and knocked in three runs.
The Keys and Pelicans conclude their three-game series Tuesday at 7 p.m., Frederick hoping to avoid a three-game sweep in their final regular-season meeting with Myrtle Beach. Lefty Tim Berry (8-6, 3.87) starts for the Keys against Texas 2013 first-round pick Chi Chi Gonzalez, making his Carolina League debut.
