Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Another Chance to Surge Above Water: The Salem Sox have submarined under the .500 mark for most of the season, inching back to the surface a bunch of times but never quite moving above the plateau. Tonight brings another opportunity to rise up. With a win this evening, the Salem Sox would raise their full-season record above the .500 mark for the first time since they were 15-14. Ninety games later, the Sox have won eight of their last 11 games. With 22 remaining, the Sox have 11 at home and 11 on the road, and Salem resides a game and a half behind Carolina in the race for the final playoff spot in the Southern Division.
Best Betts: On Monday, Mookie Betts helped the Salem Sox continue their streak of consecutive weeks receiving a weekly honor. With the second-baseman earning the Carolina League Player of the Week award, it is the sixth straight week that a Salem player has picked up either the Player of the Week or Pitcher of the Week honor. Betts has currently hit in nine straight games, in which he's batting .419 (13-for-31) with five walks and 12 RBI. He has homered in two of his last three games, going deep on Friday in Salem and on Sunday in Wilmington. Last night, he drove in a career high five-runs to help the Sox earn a series-opening win against the Blue Rocks. Having gone a perfect 13-for-13 in stolen base attempts since being promoted from Greenville, he has not been caught since a July 6 game in the South Atlantic League. Between the two levels, he has 31 steals in 33 tries on the season.
Deven to Double-A: Following a strong five-game stretch, in which he reached base 13 times, Salem shortstop Deven Marrero earned a promotion to Double-A Portland. The promotion also comes a day after Marrero went deep for just the second time this year. The almost 23-year-old (He'll turn 23 on August 25) hit .256 in 85 games for the Red Sox, with 20 doubles, two homers, and 21 RBI, stealing 21 bases in 23 attempts. In his final five games with Salem, Marrero hit .389 (7-for-18) with five RBI and six walks.
Winning William: Salem righthander William Cuevas tossed seven powerful innings on Sunday evening, setting the tone for a 6-1 victory over Wilmington. With the triumph, Cuevas improved to 6-1 in his last 12 starts, in which he possesses a 4.04 ERA. Across the Advanced-A level, only Modesto's Ben Alsup has more wins than Cuevas over the past two months. Alsup is 7-1 since June 11, albeit with a 5.37 ERA. In two starts in August, Cuevas owns a 2.24 ERA, permitting just three earned runs over 12 innings on the hill.
Quality Wasted: Salem starter Mickey Pena could be 6-0 in his last six starts, but the Sox had only scored 13 runs of support for him in his last half a dozen outings. Consequently, Pena suffered another loss on Saturday night, despite permitting just one run over six innings. All of his last six starts have been quality, but Pena has gone just 2-3 over the stretch. The lefthander has a 2.08 ERA in his last six starts, permitting nine runs on 29 hits in 39 innings since July 11, holding opponents to a .218 average.
Salem's Winning Ways: For the fifth straight week, a Salem player was included among the duo of Carolina League weekly award winners. Mike Augliera received the Pitcher of the Week nod for the second straight week and the third time in the last month. Stefan Welch and Henry Owens also picked up honors in July.
