Frederick Keys News Release

Zebulon, NC - Carolina scored three times on a trio of hits and an error in the sixth to defeat the Keys 3-1 at Five County Stadium on Friday night. The Keys left 10 on base and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position to halt their three-game winning streak.

In the sixth, Keys starter Lucas Long gave up a leadoff single to right to Ryan Gebhardt. Keith Curcio reached on an error by Erick Salcedo to place two on. After Joseph Odom struck out, Joey Meneses bounced a ball to Salcedo, who was unsuccessful in trying to get an out at third. With the bases loaded, Jordan Edgerton roped a ball down the third base line for a two-run double to score Gebhardt and Curcio. Braxton Davidson followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

Frederick attacked first in the initial frame against Max Povse. Jay Gonzalez reached on an infield single and Salcedo bunted for a hit to put two on base. A wild pitch advanced both into scoring position. Aderlin Rodriguez entered the box with one out and grounded out to the shortstop to score Gonzalez. However, on the same play, Salcedo attempted to score from second base and was thrown out at home to end the inning.

The Keys had chances to add insurance. They knocked two hits in the second and third innings against Povse, but stranded five runners through three. Povse lasted five innings in the no-decision and struck out a career-high 10.

In the seventh, Frederick loaded the bases with two outs against Sean McLaughlin (3-2), but Rodriguez flied out to center to end the threat. Down to their final three outs, the Keys earned two walks versus Chase Johnson-Mullins, but Salcedo grounded into a game-ending double play to give Johnson-Mullins his sixth save.

Long (2-3) took the loss, although he tossed a quality start. In six innings, he gave up six hits, three runs (one earned), walked none, and struck out five.

Frederick returns to take on the Carolina Mudcats for game two of the four-game series on Saturday at 5 p.m. RHP Franderlin Romero (0-0, 0.00) makes his Orioles organizational debut after being acquired from the Cincinnati Reds against Mudcats RHP Ryan Clark (0-4, 6.64). The broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
