Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Jake Stinnett worked seven strong innings but suffered his first loss of the season Friday as the Wilmington Blue Rocks defeated the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 3-1 at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Stinnett (4-1) allowed three runs over the first four innings, but settled down to retire the final 11 batters of his outing. In all, he allowed two earned runs on five hits over seven innings while striking out four.
Stinnett began the game by hitting Blue Rocks (14-31) leadoff hitter Cody Jones. After a sacrifice bunt and stolen base, Alfredo Escalera drove in Jones with a groundout to make the score 1-0 Wilmington.
With the same score in the second, Austin Bailey singled for Wilmington with one out. Elier Hernandez followed with an infield single down the third base line. Two batters later, Luis Villegas singled home Bailey to extend the Blue Rocks lead to 2-0.
With Wilmington leading 2-0 in the fourth, Bailey reached base again by beginning the inning with a walk. Two batters later, Robert Pehl drove him in with a base hit to make the score 3-0 Wilmington.
With the score still 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Blue Rocks starter Josh Staumont (1-4) walked the first two batters before reliever Derek Gordon issued a free pass to Jason Vosler. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Charcer Burks struck out. The next batter was Shawon Dunston Jr., who drove in a run with a fielder's choice. However, that was all the Pelicans (26-21) would get, as the score remained 3-1 at the end of six innings.
Staumont finished his outing with just one run allowed on two hits over five-plus innings of one-run ball. Gordon and Luis Rico combined to shut out the Pelicans over the final three innings. Rico earned his first save of the season.
The Pelicans and Blue Rocks will meet again at 5:05 p.m. on Saturday. RHP Jonathan Martinez (3-2, 3.35 ERA) will make the start for Myrtle Beach, while LHP Foster Griffin (0-2, 2.38 ERA) goes for Wilmington.
