Edgerton and Povse Lead the Way in 3-1 Carolina Victory

ZEBULON, NC - Jordan Edgerton ripped a go-ahead RBI double in the sixth and Max Povse struck out a career high 10 batters over five innings as the Mudcats defeated the Frederick Keys 3-1 in front of a crowd of 4,674 at Five County Stadium on Friday night.

Povse struck out a career 10 over five innings and allowed just one run to the visiting Keys (23-24). He left before the Mudcats (19-27) rallied back to take the lead with a three run sixth and did not earn a decision. In all, Povse scattered six hits, walked two and threw 88 pitches with 56 for strikes on Friday night.

Sean McLaughlin followed Povse in the sixth and worked through two scoreless frames while earning the victory. McLaughlin (3-2, 1.69) struck out two, walked two and scattered two hits over a scoreless sixth and seventh for the Mudcats.

Chase Johnson-Mullins came in for the eighth and ninth and earned a two inning save while walking two and striking out one. Johnson-Mullins (S, 6) left a runner at third in the ninth after getting Erick Salcedo to ground into a game ending double play.

The Mudcats scored all three of their runs in the sixth and came back from 1-0 deficit to take game one of the four game series. Edgerton both tied the game and drove in the go-ahead with a bases loaded RBI double in the sixth. Braxton Davidson followed with a RBI sacrifice fly to left and the Mudcats led 3-1 after six.

Edgerton was 2-for-4 with two RBI on Friday night and is 7-for-12 over his last three games with three RBI and three runs scored. He is also now 5-for-7 with the bases loaded this season and has driven in a team high 22 RBI this year.

Lucas Long allowed all three runs in the sixth, but only one was earned. Long (2-3, 3.12) pitched through the sixth, struck out five and scattered six hits while taking the loss. Reliever Tanner Scott pitched the final two innings for the Keys and kept the Mudcats scoreless while striking out two.

The series continues on Saturday night with game two of the four game set. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and features a starting pitching match-up of Carolina's RHP Ryan Clark (0-4, 6.64) against Frederick's RHP Franderlin Romero (-, -.--).

The current home stand continues with a Gilligan's Island themed Souvenir T-Shirt Giveaway Night on Saturday, May 28. The weekend series beginning on Friday, May 27 is against the Frederick Keys and will take place during Beach Weekend at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats will then conclude the next home stand on Memorial Day, May 30 with a POW/MIA chair unveiling and matinée start time.
