'Cats Claim Series Opener against Salem, 6-1
May 27, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg defeated the Salem Red Sox Friday night at Calvin Falwell Field, 6-1 and took sole possession of the best record in the Carolina League. Justus Sheffield went six frames and earned his fourth win of the season. Mike Papi and Mark Mathias each recorded multiple-hit games as well as extra-base hits that drove in a run.
GOOD THINGS COME IN PAIRS
The 'Cats scored two runs in three separate innings in the contest against Salem. Lynchburg did not wait around to get on the scoreboard. After a leadoff walk to Greg Allen, Mark Mathias hit a line drive double down the left field line to bring in the first run. Following a Yu-Cheng Chang bunt single, Bobby Bradley grounded into a double play to bring in Mathias. In the third inning Greg Allen reached base via an error and proceeded to steal his 27th bag of the season. A Mark Mathias single put runners on the corners until Mathias stole second base. Bradley hit a ground ball to second base which was booted and brought in both runs.
The Hillcats added two insurance runs in the eighth inning. Paul Hendrix singled and stole second base before he came around to score on a Mike Papi double. Papi was 3-4 with a RBI and a run scored on the evening.
DEFENSE FLASHES THE LEATHER
Lynchburg played its second consecutive errorless game and made some sparkling plays along the way. The 'Cats turned two double plays, one of which was after their speedy centerfielder came in, made a running catch, and threw out a Red Sox baserunner that failed to tag up at first base. Allen thwarted another potential threat in the top of the eighth inning as Joseph Monge hit a double in the right field gap and tried to take third base. Allen hit the cutoff man Mathias, who threw to Paul Hendrix at third to apply the tag.
The outfield kept the lead in tact with more potential run-saving catches in the final frame. Left-fielder Mike Papi made a diving catch going to his left to begin the inning. The very next batter hit a sharp fly ball to right field where David Armendariz made a running catch at the warning track for the second out.
