Keys Dropped by 'Cats

August 3, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

The Hillcats defeated the Keys, 7-1, on Wednesday night in game two of their three-game series. LHP Chris Masters was impressive for Lynchburg as he allowed one run over six innings and improved to 7-5 on the year. Frederick's lone run on the night came in the sixth inning when 1B Aaron Baker brought home SS Manny Machado on a sac fly to center field.

With LHP Nick Haughian atop the hill for Frederick, the Hillcats struck first with a run in the first. CF Todd Cunningham led off the game with a double to left. After an Andrelton Simmons ground out moved Cunningham to third, DH Phil Gosselin drove in the game's first run on a sac fly to right field.

In the bottom of the third, Frederick had a chance to take the lead but faltered. With one out and the bases loaded, Manny Machado popped out to first for the second out of the inning. Chris Masters then forced Aaron Baker to roll over to first for the final out of the frame.

Lynchburg added two more runs in the top of the fourth following a two-run homer by 1B Joey Terdoslavich.

Held scoreless through five innings, the Keys put a run on the board in the sixth. Manny Machado hit a single to left field to leadoff the inning. Machado took an aggressive turn around first but returned back to the bag when the L.V. Ware's throw came into 2B Barrett Kleinknecht. Kleinknecht, however, turned and fired an arrant throw into the Keys' dugout on the first base line. The two-base throwing error advanced Machado to third. 1B Aaron Baker followed up with a sac fly to left field.

Machado's run was the lone run the Keys were able to score on Wednesday night. Following Masters six innings of work, Andrew Wilson and Ryan Buchter closed out the game for Lynchburg.

On the night, Nick Haughian fell to 8-5 on the year. Haughian allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits over seven innings of work. He struck out seven in the losing effort.

The Keys and Hillcats will play the rubbermatch of the three-game series on Thursday night in Frederick. LHP Jake Pettit (4-0, 0.79) will start for the Keys while Lynchburg will to RHP Gary Moran. First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Bring your appetite to the ballpark on Thursday as it is 50-cent hot dog night. For tickets, contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
