SALEM, VA - The Salem Red Sox will welcome The Famous Chicken to LewisGale Field on Saturday, August 13 during the 6:05 p.m. game against the Kingston Indians. With a career spanning five decades, The Chicken is a first class member of the Mascot's Hall of Fame and was named by the Sporting News as one of the "Top 100 Most Powerful People in Sports For the 20th Century." The mascot has performed for superstars in sports and others, including Dale Earnhardt, Peyton Manning, James Brown, Elvis, and Ronald Reagan. It will be the first appearance in Salem for the popular entertainment act in 18 years.
"We are extremely thrilled to have the original mascot come back to Salem," said Salem Red Sox general manager Todd Stephenson. "The Chicken was a trailblazer for other great mascots like Wally the Green Monster, the Philly Phanatic, and the Milwaukee Sausages. We hope our fans really enjoy the opportunity to see a part of sports history."
The Salem Red Sox play a seven-game home stand Thursday, August 11 through Wednesday, August 17.
* Thursday is 8/11 night presented by Virginia Utility Protection Service which serves as a reminder to residents to call 811 before digging. The "miss utility" company will be on hand to discuss the importance of calling 811 before you dig, participate in promotions and much more.
