Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, MD (JUNE 26, 2010) - The Frederick offense exploded for the second straight night as the Keys blasted the Dash 10-4 on Saturday evening at Harry Grove Stadium. Winston-Salem starter Stephen Sauer allowed all ten Frederick runs in the first four innings as the Dash dropped their second straight game.
The Keys (2-1, 43-30) picked up where they left off the night before, when they beat the Dash 11-2. L.J. Hoes, in his first game off the disabled list, hit a two-run double in the first inning to give Frederick a 2-0 lead.
Winston (1-2, 44-29) got one of those runs back in the second inning. Luis Sierra brought in Seth Loman with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit in half.
Frederick kept producing at the plate in the bottom of the inning as the first three batters singled off Sauer (5-4) to load the bases. Xavier Avery then hit a ground ball to the shortstop that Eduardo Escobar bobbled for an error, allowing a run to score and reloading the bases. Kyle Hudson hit into a fielder's choice to bring in another run, making it 4-1. Sauer then attempted to pick off Hudson, but the ball squirted away from first baseman Kyle Shelton to allow Phillip Britton to score from third and putting the Keys ahead by four runs.
The Dash stayed within shouting distance on an RBI single by Eduardo Escobar in the top of the third against Frederick starter Cole McCurry (3-2).
The Keys, however, kept pounding away at Sauer in the fourth inning. After two reached with one out, Joe Mahoney crushed a three-run home run to right field, doubling the Frederick lead to 8-2. Billy Rowell and Pedro Florimon added RBI singles later in the inning to make it a 10-2 Keys advantage.
Winston-Salem got solo home runs from Escobar and Brandon Short later in the game to account for the Dash's final two runs.
McCurry collected his second win as a starting pitcher this season, allowing two runs on two hits in five innings. Sauer dropped his second straight start and lost to Frederick for the third time this season, giving up ten runs (eight earned) on ten hits in 3.1 innings. Winston's starting pitchers have now gone 4.1 innings or less in each of the team's first three games of the second half.
Escobar committed two errors, but was the Dash's offensive star. He went 3 for 4 with a single, double, home run, and two RBI.
Ozzie Lewis and Sierra each saw their hitting streaks end on Saturday. Lewis' ten-game streak was closed out with an 0 for 4 night at the plate, while Sierra went 0 for 3 to end his streak at six.
After starting the season 4-0-1 in road series, Winston-Salem has lost its last six series away from home.
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Sunday at 5 p.m. when it starts a six game home stand with a series against the Salem Red Sox. RHP Terry Doyle (2-3, 3.71) looks to even his record and collect his second win of the season against the Red Sox.
