Big Innings Lead Keys Past Dash

The Keys (2-1, 43-30) dominated Saturday night's rubbermatch from the start. Frederick scored two runs in the first and three in the second and never looked back. The Keys piled up 14 hits against the Dash (1-2, 44-29) and finished the evening with 10 runs. Frederick scored a total of 21 runs in the final two games of the three-game series against Winston-Salem.

After LHP Cole McCurry tossed a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Keys gave their starter some insurance runs before he went out for the second. With two on and two out, 2B LJ Hoes drove the first pitch he saw into centerfield for a two-run single. Hoes reentered the Keys lineup for the first time since May 15. He missed 37 games due to Mononucleosis. In an eight-game rehab stint with Short-Season A Aberdeen, Hoes hit .464 (13-28) with five doubles, a triple, a homerun, and five RBI.

Winston-Salem scored a run in the top of the second but Frederick answered right back with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. 3B Billy Rowell, SS Pedro Florimon, and C Phillip Britton all singled to load the bases for CF Xavier Avery. Avery hit a grounder to SS Eduardo Escobar but he could not handle it. All the Keys runners were safe and Rowell scored from third to make it 3-1 Frederick. Following a fielder's choice by LF Kyle Hudson that scored Florimon, 1B Kyle Shelton could not catch a pickoff attempt from Stephen Sauer. The ball scooted away from Shelton and Britton hustled home from third to give the Keys a 5-1 advantage after two innings.

The Dash scored another run in the top of the third but it did not matter much because Frederick plated five in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and Hudson and Welty on base, 1B Joe Mahoney belted the Sauer pitch deep to rightfield for a three-run homerun. Mahoney's homer was his ninth of the year, which surpasses his total from 2009 in Delmarva and Frederick. The Keys scored two more runs in the fourth as they reached double-digits for the second consecutive night.

LJ Hoes finished his first night back with the Keys since mid May 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Pedro Florimon went 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI in his first game with Frederick since the 2009 campaign.

LHP Cole McCurry improved 3-2 after allowing just one earned run over five innings on the night. It was his first start since May 29 in Lynchburg.

The Keys will start up a three-game series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Sunday night. Frederick will throw RHP Ryan O'Shea (4-3, 3.44) while Wilmington will counter with RHP Bryan Paukovitis. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. on Beach Night at Harry Grove Stadium. The first 500 children in attendance on Sunday night will receive a goldfish Webkinz courtesy of the Frederick News Post.
