SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Kernels scored four runs in the 1st inning and a pair of pitchers took it the rest of the way in an 8-4 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks at Coveleski Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Jose Berrios (3-0) went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits. He struck out 8 and walked 0. Steve Gruver collected his 2nd save as he went 3 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits. He struck out 7 and walked 1 as the duo combined to strike out 15 and walked 1.
The Kernels (20-8) sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs in the 1st inning to take a 4-0 lead. Byron Buxton scored on a passed ball. A RBI single by Dalton Hicks brought home Niko Goodrum. Jairo Rodriguez plated a pair with a 2-RBI single, scoring both Hicks and Adam Brett Walker
The Kernels pushed a run across in the 6th inning without a hit as they extended their lead to 5-0. Tyler Grimes walked to start the inning and eventually scored on Byron Buxton's RBI sacrifice fly.
The Silver Hawks (19-8) scored twice in the 6th inning to trim the Kernels lead to 5-2. Brandon Drury and Ryan Court began the inning with back to back doubles. Court's double scored Drury, and Court later came home on a wild pitch.
Travis Harrison lifted a 2-run home run out to left field in the 7th inning to get those runs back and take a 7-2 lead. It was Harrison's 4th of the season and brought Adam Brett Walker home to score.
South Bend picked up two runs in the 8th inning, cutting the Kernels lead to 7-4. Ryan Court scored on a missed catch error by Kernels shortstop Niko Goodrum. Kevin Medrano's RBI infield single brought Steven Rodriguez home.
Travis Harrison's RBI single in the 9th inning scored Niko Goodrum and put the Kernels up 8-4.
Brad Allen (0-1) took the loss for South Bend, going 5 innings and allowing 4 runs on 5 hits.
