Dayton Dragons News Release
Geneva, Ill.-Kane County pitchers Michael Heesch and Nathan Dorris combined on a five-hit shutout as the Cougars topped the Dayton Dragons 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in a game played in one hour, 59 minutes. The win was Kane County's sixth straight and improved their record to 14-13. The Dragons fell to 9-20 with the loss.
Heesch (1-2) worked the first seven and one-third innings for the Cougars. He allowed an infield single to the first batter of the game, Dayton's Zach Vincej, and then retired the next 20 batters before Joe Hudson doubled off the left field fence in the seventh. Heesch walked no one and struck out five to earn the win.
The Dragons put a threat together in the eighth inning when Tanner Rahier and Robert Ramirez collected back-to-back one-out singles against Heesch. Cougars reliever Nathan Dorris was summoned from the bullpen and threw one pitch to end the frame, getting Brent Peterson to ground into a double play.
In the Dayton ninth, Vincej singled to left field to start the inning, but Dorris got Beau Amaral to ground into a double play before Jesse Winker grounded out to first base to end the game.
The Dragons finished with five hits. Vincej was 2 for 4. Hudson's double was the Dragons only extra base hit.
Dragons starting pitcher Drew Cisco (2-2) worked the first five innings, allowing two runs on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts to suffer the loss. Wandy Peralta replaced Cisco and pitched two good innings, allowing one hit and no runs with a walk and a strikeout. Sean Lucas tossed one scoreless inning to close out the afternoon for the Dragons mound unit.
Kane County scored the game's first run in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded single by Oliver Zapata. They added one more run in the first on back-to-back doubles by Gioskar Amaya and Dan Vogelbach.
The Dragons and Cougars meet in the series finale on Monday at 12:00 p.m. EDT. Sal Romano (2-1, 1.64) will start for Dayton against Kane County's Lendy Castillo (0-1, 8.53). The next home game is Wednesday, May 8 vs. Lansing. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
Notes: Cisco issued a walk to Vogelbach in the first inning to snap Cisco's personal streak of 28.1 straight innings without a base on balls. He had allowed a sixth inning walk in his first start of the year on April 6 before going four consecutive starts without giving up another. Cisco walked Vogelbach again in the third and issued another walk in the fourth to give him four on the year in 38 innings.
