Beloit Sky Carp News Release
LANSING, MI - Balbino Fuenmayor cracked a go-ahead, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Lansing Lugnuts a heart-pounding 5-4 win over the Beloit Snappers in Midwest League action at Cooley Law School Stadium on Sunday evening.
The defeat ends the Snappers' three-game win streak and their record is now 14-13. The Lugnuts end a three-game losing streak and they jump to 9-18.
The bottom of the eighth started with Lansing behind 4-2 and Christian Lopes leading-off against Tucker Healy (0-1) and Lopes ignited a rally by dropping a single into right. Healy got the next two batters, but an error then allowed Lopes to score and the batter to reach and that's when Fuenmayor (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 runs) came up to deliver the decisive blow. Arik Sikula (2-0) got the victory for recording the last out of the eighth and he also hurled a scoreless ninth.
Beloit put two runs on the board in the second, one of them on an RBI single by Ryan Mathews. The second scored on a squeeze play, as Christopher Bostick (2-3, 2 runs, SB) came home on a sacrifice bunt by Brett Vertigan. Another sacrifice bunt helped push across a third run in the fifth when Daniel Robertson (3-5, RBI, run) singled and was sacrificed to second by Nick Rickles, A Matt Olson double then plated Robertson for a 3-0 lead.
Michael Ynoa started for the Snappers and had his best outing of 2013. The Lugnuts were able to get only three hits and zero walks off Ynoa in four innings, while striking out four times.
Andres Avila replaced Ynoa in the fifth and was tagged for two runs in that frame. Consecutive two-baggers by Kellen Sweeney and Fuenmayor resulted in one run and a third double three batters later, this one by Jorge Flores, added the second. Robertson gave Beloit a 4-2 lead in the sixth with a single that drove in Bostick. That's how the score would stay until the eighth.
The final game of this series and this road trip will be played on Monday with a start time of 6:05pm CT. Beloit's starting pitcher will be RHP Seth Streich (2-1, 6.48 ERA), while Lansing's starter is TBD.
