Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Balbino Fuenmayor hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Lansing Lugnuts (9-18) a 5-4 win over the Beloit Snappers (14-13) at Cooley Law School Stadium on Sunday night.
Trailing 4-2 entering the eighth, the Lugs plated a run on two errors by Snappers' third baseman Renato Nunez before Fuenmayor sent a blast over the wall in right field, putting Lansing ahead for the first time in the game.
Tucker Healy (Loss, 0-1) took the loss in relief for the Snappers. Healy lasted just two-thirds of an inning, allowing all three runs to the Lugnuts in the eighth, but none of them were earned.
Lugnuts starter Taylor Cole threw 4.2 innings, allowing three runs - two of them earned - on seven hits. Cole struck out five Snappers and walked three in the no-decision.
It was Arik Sikula (Win, 2-0) who was the beneficiary of the win in relief, coming on in the eighth inning and then closing things out in the ninth. In total, the Lugnuts pen threw 4.1 innings, allowing just one run on two hits, with four strikeouts.
Right-hander Michael Ynoa got the start for Beloit and lasted a season-high four innings. He kept the Lugnuts scoreless while surrendering just three hits and striking out four.
Andres Avila came on in relief of Ynoa and got roughed up in his first inning of work, as doubles by Kellen Sweeney, Fuenmayor and Jorge Flores plated two for the Lugnuts in the home half of the fifth inning, getting them to within 3-2 at that point.
The series rubber match is set for a 7:05 p.m. first-pitch on Monday night. The Lugnuts will send right-hander Ben White (0-2, 5.52) to the mound for his second start of the season. White will take on Beloit right-hander Seth Streich (2-1, 5.16).
