Captains Comeback Delivers Bees 7-3 Loss
May 5, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
The Lake County Captains scored five runs in the ninth to knock off the Burlington Bees 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Community Field.
Burlington (10-15) held a two-run lead going into the eighth, but the Captains (9-19) played the role of spoiler in the second game of the series, getting one run in the eighth against Kurt Spomer and five in the ninth off of Joey Krehbiel (1-2).
Krehbiel entered the ninth with a 3-2 lead, and proceeded to allow a leadoff double to Logan Vick. Vick scored on a single by Joe Sever to tie the game. Krehbiel walked Nellie Rodriguez and after a sacrifice bunt that put men at second and third with one out, he struck out Leonardo Castillo. However, Anthony Santander was hit by a pitch and Robel Garcia walked with the bases loaded to give the Captains the lead. Jairo Diaz entered to get the final out and gave up a bases-clearing double to LeVon Washington to give the Captains a 7-3 edge.
Luis Morel (2-1) delivered a perfect ninth inning to complete his three shutout innings on the mound.
Lake County scored first in the fourth thanks to an unearned run against Eduard Santos. Logan Vick singled, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by Sandy Martinez and scored later in the play on a throwing error by Wendell Soto. Santos was pressed into action in the second after Brandon Love left after one scoreless inning. He was phenomenal, throwing four innings without allowing an earned run.
The Bees quickly took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs against Luis Dejesus. Kyle Johnson doubled to start the inning, and Pedro Toribio followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Sherman Johnson brought home Kyle Johnson on a sacrifice fly, and Wade Hinkle followed with a two-run home run to pull the Bees ahead 3-1 after four.
The Bees and Captains have split the first two games of the series. The rubber match will occur on Monday morning at 11:30 a.m. when Reid Scoggins faces Ryan Merritt at Community Field. There will not be a broadcast of the game.
