Kernels Split Doubleheader with Wisconsin

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels split their Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, winning Tuesday's suspended game 6-2 before falling 3-1 in the finale. Cedar Rapids stands at 45-26, 2-3 in the second half.

Game One - Kernels 6, Timber Rattlers 2

David Festa threw brilliantly while taking over in the third of Tuesday's suspended game, striking out seven over 5.2 innings of two-run ball to earn his sixth win of 2022. He scattered five hits and two walks, racking up 17 whiffs on 90 pitches.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand belted a two-run first-inning homer on Tuesday evening to start the scoring, then Kyler Fedko, Yunior Severino and Pat Winkel blasted three straight RBI doubles in the third before the game was suspended.

The Kernels added one more in the sixth on Wednesday afternoon as Dylan Neuse walked, stole second and third then scored on an Alerick Soularie RBI single.

Derek Molina finished things out by striking out two over 1.2 scoreless.

Game Two - Timber Rattlers 3, Kernels 1

Seth Gray accounted for the lone Kernels run and hit with a third-inning solo homer. The Kernels were stymied by Wisconsin starter Justin Jarvis, who worked 5.0 innings of one-run ball with 10 strikeouts.

Tyler Palm threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief while Hunter McMahon allowed a lone run over 3.0 innings of three-hit ball as the spot starter.

Game three of the series is set for 6:40 p.m. on Thursday evening in Appleton.
