Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - After a win Tuesday, the Fort Wayne TinCaps lost, 14-4, to the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate) on Wednesday night at LMCU Ballpark.
Newly acquired Cole Cummings led Fort Wayne offensively for the second straight night. Cummings, who debuted at the High-A level on Tuesday with three hits, picked up his fourth hit in the second inning with a looper to left field. Later in the frame, the DH swiped second base for his first stolen base with the TinCaps (1-4, 28-43).
However, Fort Wayne trailed 4-0 after two innings.
Nevertheless, Cummings came through again in the fourth. After Robert Hassell's leadoff single and Lucas Dunn's RBI triple made it 4-1, the 24-year-old delivered a sacrifice fly for his second RBI with the TinCaps. But after Fort Wayne pulled to within a run, West Michigan scored four more in the ensuing bottom of the fourth to make it 8-3.
Meanwhile, Cummings, the Corona, California native, added another single in the fifth and was hit by a pitch in the seventh. Cummings was one of two hitters in the game with multiple base hits, and the only TinCap.
Left fielder Daniel Cabrera led the Whitecaps (3-2, 34-37) with four hits, including a home run. Though hits were even at six apiece, this wound up being the most runs allowed by Fort Wayne in a game this season as West Michigan drew nine walks and benefitted from three hit-by-pitches, plus an error.
Though his nine-game hitting streak came to an end, TinCaps left fielder Corey Rosier was hit by a pitch, extending his on-base streak to 13 games.
Next Game: Thursday, June 30 @ West Michigan (6:35 p.m.)
