Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The TinCaps dominated the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate), 8-3, on Tuesday evening at LMCU Ballpark as Fort Wayne won its first game of the season's second half. The TinCaps were boosted by the debuts of new roster additions in second baseman Max Ferguson and first baseman Cole Cummings.
The infielders were called up by the Padres from Single-A Lake Elsinore ahead of the game.
Cummings was the first to make an impact. With Fort Wayne leading 2-1 in the top of the second inning and Matthew Acosta on third after a triple, Cummings slammed a ball into the right-field corner for his first TinCaps hit and RBI. Ferguson followed suit two batters later with a single to deep right field for his first High-A hit. Fort Wayne scored five in the second, initiated by a Jarryd Dale solo home run. Corey Rosier capped the garage with a two-out, two-run single, which also extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Ferguson and Cummings continued their excellence at the plate throughout. Ferguson finished 2-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base. His 52nd swiped bag of the year leads professional baseball. Cummings reached base four times with three hits and a walk -- something he hadn't even accomplished with Lake Elsinore.
Fort Wayne's first win of the half also featured strong relief pitching. After starter Ryan Bergert went the first three, southpaws Gabe Morales and Ramon Perez shut out West Michigan (2-2, 33-37) over six innings. Morales' four innings matched a season high.
The TinCaps (1-2, 28-42) finished with 13 hits as eight batters recorded at least one hit, and all nine reached base.
