Dayton Dragons News Release
Wednesday, June 29, 2022 l Game # 71 (5)
Dow Diamond l Midland, Mich. l 7:05 p.m.
Radio: Fox Sports 980 WONE
Dayton Dragons (2-2, 41-29) at Great Lakes Loons (4-0, 44-26)
RH Joe Boyle (3-1, 0.72) vs. RH Kyle Hurt (4-2, 2.52)
Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the Great Lakes Loons (affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers) at Dow Diamond. Tonight's game is the second of a six-game series and the fifth game of the second half in the Midwest League's split-season format.
Season Series: Great Lakes 6, Dayton 1.
Last Game: Tuesday: Great Lakes 18, Dayton 6. The Dragons got home runs from Daniel Vellojin, Elly De La Cruz, and Austin Hendrick but allowed three big innings. Great Lakes led 9-5 going to the bottom of the eighth before scoring nine runs in the inning with just one ball leaving the infield. Dragons pitchers walked a club record eight batters in the inning including five with the bases loaded. De La Cruz was 3 for 3 for Dayton.
Historically Speaking: The Dragons first half winning percentage of .591 (record of 39-27) was the second best in franchise history, trailing the 2007 Dragons, who finished 44-26. The 2022 first half record was the fourth best in any half in Dragons history (2011 second half: 48-22; 2001 second half: 41-28).
What's Next: The 66-game second half is underway. The Dragons could qualify for the playoffs in one of two ways: 1) By winning the second half East Division title; 2) By finishing with the next best full-season record in the East Division (behind Great Lakes) should Great Lakes win the second half division title. If the same team wins both halves, the team with the next best full-season record qualifies as the second half representative.
Team Notes
Dayton has split their four second half games despite being outscoring 40-18. The two losses featured 35 of the 40 runs allowed.
Dayton is first in the MWL in home runs with 85 and first in slugging percentage at .418. However, the Dragons lead the league in strikeouts (their total of 815 is third most in Minor League Baseball). The Dragons have only nine sacrifice flies this season, tied for the fewest in Minor League Baseball.
Player Notes
Elly De La Cruz (seventh youngest position player in the league with at least 120 AB) over his last 29 games is batting .339 with eight home runs and 21 RBI. De La Cruz leads the MWL in OPS and slugging percentage and is in the top four in home runs, RBI, batting average, hits, runs, extra base hits, and stolen bases.
Daniel Vellojin has played in eight games since joining the Dragons, batting .375 with a .531 on-base percentage (1.073 OPS).
Joe Boyle has an earned run average of 0.72 and opponent's batting average of .089 on the year. Both figures would lead all Minor League Baseball, but he is six innings short of the minimum number to qualify.
