
Kernels earn split with Game Two win

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -- The Cedar Rapids Kernels beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-1 in game two of a doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Stadium Friday night. Brok Butcher pitched five scoreless innings for his third win of the season.
Wisconsin (43-75 overall, 16-32 second half) had Butcher on the ropes in the second inning. The Rattlers loaded the bases with one out, but Butcher got out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout.
The Kernels (51-57, 21-26) scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. Anderson Rosario reached on an error to start the inning. Later in the frame, he scored on a second error on a grounder by Marco Albano for a 1-0 Cedar Rapids lead. The other Kernel run in the inning scored on a two-out single by Dallas Morris and the Kernels were up 2-0.
Cedar Rapids added to their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hainley Statia's RBI single drove in the first run. Statia would score on the third Timber Rattler error of the game to go up 4-0.
Curtis Ledbetter hit a two-out solo home run in the top of the seventh to break up the shutout bid.
The Rattlers and Kernels continue their series on Saturday night. Lance Beus (0-4, 2.12ERA) makes his first start as a Timber Rattler. Tommy Mendoza (8-6, 4.32ERA) is the scheduled starter for Cedar Rapids. Game time is 7:00pm.
