Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

FOX CITIES STADIUM -- Ron Garth homered, drove in a pair of runs, and turned a spectacular double play to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 5-3 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in game one of a doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Stadium Friday night. Eddy Hernandez blasted a two-run homer and Marwin Vega picked up his first win since July 8 with five strong innings.

Garth gave the Rattlers (43-74 overall, 16-31 second half) a quick lead with a two-out, solo home run to left in the first inning. Then, Gerardo Avila, who had three hits in the game, reached on a bloop single and went to second on a wild pitch. Adam Moore delivered an RBI single and Wisconsin was up 2-0.

The Kernels (51-65, 20-26) got a run back in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI ground out by Brett Martinez.

Garth put the Rattlers back up by two runs with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third.

Hernandez lined a two-run homer to left-center in the top of the fourth inning and Wisconsin went up 5-1.

Cedar Rapids pulled to within 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles by Jordan Renz and Dallas Morris. The Kernels had runners at first and second with one out when Garth showed that he can play defense too.

Mark Trumbo sent a liner back through the middle of the infield. The Rattler second baseman made a diving catch of the liner and walked to the second base bag to double off the runner and end the inning. Vega's night ended on that double play. He allowed three runs on six hits and struck out four.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx relieved Vega, pitched a scoreless sixth, and got the first two outs of the bottom of the seventh before the game became very interesting. Back-to-back singles and an error loaded the bases for the Kernels. However, Bibens-Dirkx struck out Anderson Rosario to end the game and pick up his third save.
