Chiefs Flop a Pair of Sixes to Beat Bees

Peoria, IL (August 10, 2006) "" The Peoria Chiefs (23-24, 64-52) scored six runs in the first and six runs in the eighth to beat the Burlington Bees (19-28, 54-60) 12-9 at O'Brien Field tonight. In a battle of big innings, the Bees did most of their damage with a seven-run fourth. The Chiefs lead this series 1-0 and the season series 11-2.

The Chiefs jumped on Bees' starter Carlos Rosa right away tonight. Davy Gregg led off the first with a single and Ryne Malone followed with a two-run homer to right. The Chiefs had more runs in the first two batters than Rosa had allowed in any of his last four starts. After getting two outs, Rosa walked Robinson Chirinos and Kyle Reynolds homered to right for a 4-0 lead. Yusuf Carter reached and went to second on a throwing error by Josh Johnson at second and scored on a single by Alberto Garcia. Blake Lalli capped the rally with a double of the wall in left to drive in Garcia for a 6-0 lead.

The Bees chipped away at Peoria starter Jesus Yepez. Jeff Howell led off the second with a double and scored two batters later on a double by Jeremy Jirschele. With the bases loaded and one out in the second, Howell hit a bouncer to third, but reached ahead of the relay throw to first to avoid a double play and pick up an RBI. The Bees then popped for seven in the fourth to match their biggest inning of the season. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with nobody out and Jose Duarte and Johnson each singled toingled to drive in runs to get the Bees to within two at 6-4 and knock Yepez out of the game. Jesse Estrada came in and struck out Mario Lisson, but Miguel Vega hit a deep sacrifice fly to right to bring in another run and leave runners on the corners with two away. With Johnson running at first, Estrada threw one past the catcher Lalli to the screen to allow Duarte to score the tying run and get Johnson all the way to third. Howell then doubled to right-center to score Johnson and give the Bees a 7-6 lead. Brady Everett followed with an infield single, stole second, and after a walk to Jirschele, Omar Pena lined a base hit to right to drive in the final two runs.

Rosa didn't allow another run after the first and worked through five innings. David Heninger pitched 1.2 innings and left with a man on in the seventh, but Chris Hayes struck out Carter to end the inning. In the eighth, Hayes got the first out, but gave up singles to Lalli and Davy Gregg. Eliezer Garcia came in and walked Malone to load the bases for Kraig Schambough. Jesus Valdez then hit a slow roller to the left side the somehow snuck past both Lisson and Pena and into left field allowing two runs to score and leave runners on the corners with one out. Ryan Norwood hit a bouncing ball over the mound that Pena fielded, but was indecisive on what to do with the ball, costing the Bees a chance for an inning-ending double play. Valdez was forced at second as Malone scored to tie the game at nine. A hit batsmen and a walk loaded the bases for Carter. Schambough froze Carter on a 2-2 pitch that the Bees thought was strike three, but wasn't called. Carter hit the next pitch through the right side for a two-run single and Garcia hit one in the same spot for an RBI to give the Chiefs the 12-9 lead.

Matt Avery came in and finished the top of the ninth, betting Valentino Arce to bounce out to end the game and Arce's 12-game hitting streak. Avery earned his 15th save. Roger Evenson (1-2) pitched four scoreless innings from the fifth through the eighth and got the win for Peoria. Schambough (4-8) was charged with his fifth blown save and got the loss.

The Bees and Chiefs continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at O'Brien Field. RH Matt Kniginyzky (8-4, 3.36) will start for the Bees against RH Joel Santo (7-8, 5.33) for the Chiefs. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
