Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. - The Kernels outhit the visiting Quad Cities River Bandits 9 to 4, but stranded six runners in scoring position in a 3-1 loss on Tuesday night. The Bandits (26-26) took their fourth game in the rare five-game regular season series, and earned their eighth win against Cedar Rapids (23-29) in 2012.
The score was knotted at 1 when both lead-off hitters scored in the first inning. Quad Cities' Virgil Hill reached on an error by Chevy Clarke and quickly scored on a wild pitch and passed ball. The Kernels Kevin Moesquit singled to lead off the bottom half of the first frame, and scored from first base two hitters later. Kaleb Cowart hit his first of two doubles in the game for his league leading 39th RBI of the season.
The Bandits scored their decisive runs in the third inning when two runners that had walked scored on a single and wild pitch in consecutive at-bats.
The Kernels best chance for a rally came with no outs to spare in the bottom of the 9th inning. After two quick outs, Carlos Lugo reached base for the third time in the game after drawing a walk. Pinch hitter Frazier Hall singled, and Moesquit was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ryan Jones swung at the first pitch he saw and contacted a line drive, but it went right at Quad Cities SS Matt Williams to end the game.
Aaron Meade was fantastic in relief of Cedar Rapids starter Cam Bedrosian, as the southpaw tossed 4.1 innings, allowed 1 hit, and struck out 5. While Meade was on the mound, he did not allow a walk, and no runners reached scoring position. Stephen Tromblee mirrored Meade as the third and final pitcher for Cedar Rapids, also allowing 1 hit in his 2.0 innings.
Bedrosian (0-5) took the loss for the Kernels despite 3 strikeouts and a mere 2 hits allowed in his 2.2 innings. River Bandits' starter Kyle Hald (1-3) earned his first victory of the season after 7.0 innings and 5 strikeouts. Tyler Miller relieved Hald and earned his first save of the season.
The Kernels now open up a home series vs. the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the Midwest League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, on Wednesday evening. Game time is 6:35 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
