Great Lakes Rallies Late to Win 6-5

MIDLAND, MI - Down three runs from the start of the fourth inning of Tuesday night's game at Dow Diamond, the Great Lakes Loons waited until the ninth inning to ignite a rally that tied the game 5-5 before Jesse Bosnik walked off with the game-winning hit against the South Bend Silver Hawks in the 10th.

Bosnik, who was 0-for-4 before his final at-bat, stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. Angelo Songco and O'Koyea Dickson had both reached base on errors and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Joe Winker was intentionally walked to load them up and give Bosnik the spotlight. The lefty made the most of it by dropping a base-hit into shallow right field.

"I wanted to be aggressive, but [was looking for a pitch] in the zone," Bosnik said of his approach in the 10th. "I knew there was nowhere for [the pitcher] to put me, so they are going to try to get a strike...I was in the right spot at the right time, but anything to get the team a win...The win is huge, because if South Bend takes 3-of-4 games, it would have been an uphill battle a little bit."

The win gives the Loons the 2-2 series split with South Bend, who are one of the many teams in the race for the Midwest League's final playoff spot in the eastern division. The two both hold a record of 27-25, which is one game back from Bowling Green, who currently controls their postseason destiny with 18 games to go in the first half.

Prior to the 10th inning win, the Loons put together three quick runs to tie the game in the ninth against South Bend reliever Matt Sample. Leading off, Songco fought off eight pitches to get on board with a walk, and was followed by Dickson, gifted his base on a four-pitch walk. Scott Schebler knocked his second double of the night, and 14th of the season, to get the first run in. Joe Winker kept the rally going with a bullet RBI-single up the gap into shallow center. The game-tying run came during the next ball put in play, as South Bend tried to turn two, shortstop Josh Parr committed a throwing error giving Schebler time to come home.

Jose Dominguez started on the hill for the Loons and ran into trouble early with three runs in the first inning, and finishing with five in the game, four earned, through three innings. The Loons bullpen banded to together in the final seven frames to shut down the S-Hawks, with Joel Lima eating up 3.1 innings, Juan Noriega collecting 2.2, before Yimi Garcia pitched the 10th to earn his third win.

Offensive note: Songco finished 1-for-3, drawing two walks, and hitting a deep two-run homer in the first inning.

The Loons hit the road Wednesday for a quick three-game series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. The team returns to Dow Diamond on Saturday, June 2, to host the Detroit Tigers Single-A affiliate, the West Michigan Whitecaps. Saturday's game will be followed by a Fireworks Loontacular powered by Dow Corning.
