Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels are pleased to announce that outfielder LaMonte Wade and pitcher Sam Clay have been selected as the April Player and Pitcher of the Month.
LaMonte Wade topped all Twins minor leaguers with a .361 batting average in April while also posting a .542 slugging percentage buoyed by nine extra-base hits, including one home run. He hit safely in his first 12 games this season for the best season-opening hit streak by any Midwest League batter. Wade, a ninth round pick by the Twins last year, also reached safely in 18 of his 19 appearances in April.
Sam Clay went 2-0 in four April starts and led all Twins organization starting pitchers - including Minnesota starters - with a 0.79 ERA last month. A fourth round pick in 2014, Clay earned his first-ever Kernels victory with five scoreless innings in a 7-0 combined shutout April 16 against the Clinton LumberKings. He also led all Cedar Rapids pitchers last month with 23 strikeouts and 22.2 IP.
The Kernels continue a four game road trip at Wisconsin tonight at 6:35 PM. They return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, May 17th to open a seven game home stand with games against Beloit and Quad Cities.
