Bandits Blow Big Lead, Lose in Extras

BELOIT, Wisc. - The Quad Cities River Bandits let a five run lead slip away in the ninth inning before the Beloit Snappers walked off with a 10-9 win in 13 innings at Pohlman Field on Thursday night. Aaron Mizell had two triples and four RBI in the loss while Kyle Tucker had another multi-hit game and reached base four times. It was the first time in 12 chances the Bandits have lost when leading after eight innings this year. The Snappers made seven errors while slugging three home runs in the win, while Quad Cities went 3-for-21 with runners in scoring position.

After two straight strikeouts in the 13th inning, A double by Edwin Diaz was followed by a walk and single from Steve Pallares plated the winning run as the River Bandits (14-19) were left standing in the series opener. The Bandits scored five runs over the final two innings of regulation to snap a 4-4 tie, but the Snappers (16-17) rallied for five runs in the home ninth to force extras.

Zac Person struck out the first two hitters of the 13th, but took his first loss of the season (0-1). Armando Ruiz (1-0) pitched all four extra innings, stranding three runners in scoring position to collect the win.

It was a Ruiz error that gave Quad Cities their best chance to regain the lead in extras. Anthony Hermelyn led off the top of the 13th with a high chopper to the mound, which Ruiz threw away. Hermelyn got all the way to third with nobody out, but Ruiz would strike out the side - mixing in a walk - to keep the game tied. It was the seventh error committed by the Snappers.

Quad Cities scored in the first inning for the fifth straight game. Johnny Sewald was hit by a pitch, took two bases on a throwing error during a pickoff attempt and scored on a Tucker single. Tucker had two singles and drew two walks in the loss.

Yoanys Quiala made his River Bandits debut in the start for Quad Cities. Outside of two home runs he held the Snappers scoreless, giving up three runs in four innings. Juan Carlos Santos gave up a solo home run in his only inning of work, also making his Bandits debut.
