Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Starting up a four-game series as part of a seven-game homestand at Bowling Green Ballpark, the Bowling Green Hot Rods swept a doubleheader with the Lake County Captains, winning game one by a score of 7-1 and game two by a score of 6-4.
In game one, the Hot Rods were led by a complete-game from starting pitcher Genesis Cabrera, as the 19-year-old lefty improved to 4-1 on the year with the win.
Cabrera gave up just one run on five hits while striking out six in seven innings for the first complete game from a Hot Rods pitcher in nearly two years (4/30/14 from Jacob Faria).
The Hot Rods offense was able to give Cabrera enough run support with four runs in the fourth inning against Captains starter Sam Hentges. Bowling Green leadoff the frame with a solo homer from Michael Russell and a pair of run-scoring singles from Zacrey Law and Jacob Cronenworth. Brandon Lowe also pitched in with a RBI sacrifice bunt.
For game two, the Hot Rods were able to comeback from their third multi-run deficit of the homestand to roll to their sixth win in a row.
Down 3-0 in the bottom of the second, Bowling Green got a sacrifice fly from Peter Maris to cut their deficit to two.
One inning later, the Hot Rods got another three-run homer from Sullivan and a pair of RBI singles from Kevin Padlo and Manny Sanchez to take the lead for good.
On the pitching side, Taylor Hawkins gave up three runs (one earned) in four innings while Jose Alvarado improved to 2-0 on the year by giving up just one unearned run in three innings.
With the wins, the Hot Rods have now won six straight games for the first time since July 12-18 last season. They have also won nine of ten overall and fifteen out of their last 20 games.
Bowling Green is now a season-high seven games over .500 and sits just game back of the South Bend Cubs for first place in the Midwest League East as well as the best record in the entire Midwest League.
The Hot Rods will try to continue their winning ways at home on Saturday at Bowling Green Ballpark for the third of four games against the Lake County Captains. The Hot Rods will send LHP Michael Velasquez to the mound while the Captains will counter with a pitcher that is still yet to be determined.
First pitch is scheduled at 6:35 p.m.
