Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants could not hold an early lead and fell to the Kansas City T-Bones, 6-4, on Tuesday night at Community America Ballpark.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Pheasants (24-19), who remain two games out of first place in the North Division.
The Pheasants took advantage of a fielding error and a wild pitch to score three runs in the first inning on three hits, including Cesar Nicolas' run-scoring single that collected his league-leading 42nd RBI of the season. Cristian Guerrero had an RBI groundout, and Mark Shorey knocked in a run with a two-out base hit.
Shorey left the game in the third with an injury. Jake Taylor stepped up in his place with a pinch-hit triple and came home on Trevor Lawhorn's groundout one batter later.
The scoring ended there for the Pheasants while the T-Bones responded with six unanswered runs. Kansas City (25-20) tallied a run in the third and scored twice in the fifth. In the sixth, Rod Scurry's throwing error allowed Ray Sadler to score, and Jose Duran drove in the go-ahead run with a single to right field. Enrique Cruz' solo home run in the eighth extended the deficit to 6-4.
Pheasants starter Rod Scurry (3-2) lost for the first time as a starter, allowing five runs, three earned, in five innings. He walked two and struck out three.
Kansas City starter Shaun Garceau (5-0) stayed perfect with his fifth win in as many starts. He yielded four runs, one earned, on nine hits in six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out one.
Four Kansas City relievers combined in the last three innings to shut out the Pheasants, who threatened by loading the bases in the eighth inning with nobody out but could not bring a man home.
Joe Anthonsen led the Pheasants at the plate with a pair of doubles and a 3-for-3 night.
Mike Mehlich pitched a perfect ninth for his third save of the year.
The second game of the four-game series is at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, in Kansas City. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM and www.kwsn.com.
