Fish Falter in the Ninth

Winnipeg Goldeyes closer Dexter Carter is no longer perfect.

On Tuesday night at Shaw Park, the Goldeyes blew their first save since June 18, in Sioux Falls. For Carter, it was his first blown save in six opportunities as he walked the lead-off man and then watched the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks score three runs on a bases-loaded double by Ryan Delgado as Fargo came from behind to beat Winnipeg 5-3.

"Ya gotta take care of the baseball and in the ninth, we just can't walk the leadoff man in a one-run ball game," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "In that situation, with the bases loaded and one out, all we could hope for was a double-play ball, but to get Delgado to do that, you have to keep the ball in the lower part of the strike zone. Dexter got a ball up and Delgado hammered it.

"But you really have to tip your cap to (RedHawks starter Tyler) Herron. He pitched really well and he has the best curveball I've seen in this league. He did a great job for them tonight."

With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 26-17 on the season. It was Winnipeg's second straight loss and their fourth straight loss to Fargo. Despite the loss, the Goldeyes remained in first place in the American Association's North Division, two games ahead of second-place Sioux Falls.

Fargo took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Sergio Pedroza singled home Buddy Sosnoskie, but Winnipeg battled back in the seventh when Price Kendall's two-out triple drove home Luis Alen, Kyle Day and Dan Barbero to give the Goldeyes a 3-1 lead.

But in the eighth, Nic Jackson hit a solo homer off reliever Zach Baldwin and that set up a disastrous ninth inning for the Fish as Carter walked Sosnoskie, the No. 9 hitter, gave up a single to Zach Penprase, walked Nic Jackson and the gave up the three-run double to Delgado.

"Regardless of what happened in the ninth, they were clearly better than us tonight," said Forney. "You can't win many games having an offensive game like we did tonight. We got a big hit from Price in the seventh, but other than that we didn't do anything."

Fargo reliever Kevin Fuqua (1-1, 5.06 ERA) got the win while Tom Boleska picked up his 11th save. Carter (0-2, 3.57 ERA) suffered the loss.

The Goldeyes and RedHawks will play Game 2 of this four-game series at Shaw Park tonight. Game time is 7 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play. It can also be seen live on Shaw TV Channel 9 in Winnipeg with Scott Taylor, Shawn Coates and Mitchell Clinton.
