SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Brian Bistagne hit a game-winning sac fly off of Chris Allen in the 10th inning as the Explorers beat the RailCats 4-3 in the series opener on Tuesday night. The RailCats season-high losing streak has reached seven games.
In the bottom of the tenth, Wally Backman Jr. doubled and Mike Bisenius hit a bunt single to move Backman to third. Bistagne hit a line drive to right that was caught by Mike Massaro, but his throw home was not in time as Backman scored the winning run.
Kris Sanchez hit a two-run homer to left off of Morgan Coombs in the second inning to give the Explorers a 2-0 lead. Brian Bistagne led off the third with a solo shot to make it 3-0.
Coombs lasted just three innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
The RailCats got on the board in the fourth against X's starter Ty Marotz. Mike Coles hit a one-out triple and Craig Maddox drove him home with a single.
The 'Cats had runners on the corners and nobody out in the fifth, and scoring a run on a double play by Adam Klein to cut the deficit to 3-2. In the sixth, Maddox tripled with one out and scored on a two-out infield single by Mike Rohde to tie the game at three.
Chuck Lukanen threw four scoreless innings of relief to keep the RailCats in the game and David Quinowski pitched a scoreless eighth. The RailCats had opportunities to take the lead with runners in scoring position and less than two out in the seventh, eighth and tenth inning, but could not capitalize.
The series continues on Independence Day with a 7:05 game. Kyle Wilson (1-3, 7.26) will be on the mound for the RailCats.
