Big Eighth Inning Propels Saints to 13-6 Win over Saltdogs

ST. PAUL, MN (July 3, 2012) - The largest crowd of the season was treated to an incredible finish. The eighth inning of the ballgame proved to be the difference as the St. Paul Saints pitching staff got out of a huge jam in the top of the inning and the offense exploded in the bottom half for a 13-6 win on Tuesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 7,163.

With the score tied at six in the top of the eighth inning the Saltdogs put the first two men on when Reid Mahon walked David Espinosa and John Alonso doubled him to third. Left-handed reliever Kyle Carr came in to face the left-hand hitting Stephen Holdren and struck him out. After Carr intentionally walked Jimmy Rohan, Dustin Klabunde was brought into the game. He struck out Tommy Callaro and got Salomon Manriquez to line out to end the inning.

That momentum fired up the offense because in the bottom of the eighth the Saints were given a similar situation and cashed in big. The first eight men in the inning reached and the Saints sent 11 men to the plate scoring a season tying high seven runs. With the bases loaded and nobody out Ronnie Bourquin singled home two to make it 8-6. After Tanner Townsend dropped down a bunt single to load the bases Jon Townsend made it 10-6 when he singled home a pair. A wild pitch scored Tanner Townsend to make it 11-6 and Benji Johnson doubled home Jon Townsend to make it 12-6. Jake Krause collected his fourth hit of the night with a single to left, moving Johnson to third. The Saints finished the scoring on a sacrifice fly by Jim Rapoport. The 13 runs and 18 hits were both season highs.

The Saints entered the bottom of the sixth trailing 6-1, but the offense finally awoke. With one out Krause singled. He finished the night 4-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored, collecting his second career four hit game. Rapoport followed with a single and Jose Hernandez doubled home Krause to make it 6-2. After a pitching change Willie Cabrera launched a three-run homer to right, his fourth of the season, to make it 6-5.

The Saints tied it in the seventh with two outs when Johnson singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Krause double.

Every Saints player collected at least one hit with four players collecting two hits, Hernandez collecting three and Krause rapping out four.

The same two teams meet in game two of the four game series on Wednesday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Matt Schuld (0-1, 4.50) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Ryan Sheldon (4-2, 3.06). It is Dog Days at the ballpark where fans can bring their dog. Also, for an additional $10 on top of the purchase of a ticket fans can take part in All You Can Eat. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
