Kansas City beats RailCats

June 10, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Kansas City, Kansas-Charles Peterson belted two home runs and collected five hits to lead the Kansas City T-Bones to a 24-1 route of the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Saturday night in a game shortened to seven innings due to dangerous lightning at Community America Ballpark. The T-Bones set a club record for most runs in a game while the 24 runs also set a RailCats record for most runs by an opponent.

RailCats relief pitcher Ryan Burnau set an all-time Northern League record for most runs allowed in a game with 15. He tied the league record for most earned runs allowed in a game with 13.

Gary took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, loading the bases with no one out before Mike Coles scored on double play ball off the bat of Tanner Townsend.

But Kansas City scored three runs in the bottom of the first as Pat Magness belted a long home run to right field with two men on base against RailCats starting pitcher Josh Habel. The T-Bones added six more runs off Habel in the third inning to jump ahead 9-1.

Burnau came out of the bullpen to start the fourth. He allowed a solo home run to Peterson in the fourth and then six runs in the fifth and eight more runs in the sixth. Greg Jacobs and Peterson connected on back-to-back home runs in the fifth for Kansas City.

Habel (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing eight hits and nine runs over three innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Burnau threw 122 pitches over two and one-third innings, allowing 12 hits and seven walks while striking out six. The heavy workload on the RailCats bullpen this season combined with an extra inning game on Friday and the fact that the RailCats released a pitcher who was not replaced on Thursday forced the club to keep Burnau in the game under difficult conditions.

Magness was 3 for 3 with four RBI for Kansas City. Chad Sosebee drove in five runs with a double and a triple.

The two clubs close out the three game series on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Jason Shelley (2-2, 4.30) will start for Gary against Kansas City's Jonathan Krysa (3-2, 3.90). The RailCats open a three game set at Joliet starting Tuesday.
