Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers are still winless against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks after a late inning homerun gave Fargo a 4-2 win over the Vipers Saturday night. Jesse Hoorelbeke took Ryokan Kobayashi deep in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-run shot that broke a 2-2 tie.

Justin Dowdy (0-1) took the loss for Calgary as he walked the eventual winning run on base before Kobayashi gave up the long-ball. Mike Peschel (1-2) earned the win for the RedHawks, pitching just over one inning of relief without giving up a hit. Josh Gray worked the ninth to pick up his first save.

Calgary got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when leadoff man Nelson Castro singled, stole second and moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt before scoring on a Josh Carter sacrifice fly to centerfield.

The RedHawks evened it in the bottom of the second when a bases loaded groundout by Craig Ringe scored Eric Kofler from third base. Calgary starter Evan Greusel was able to escape the inning, only giving up one run, after Fargo loaded the bases with none out.

The Vipers regained their lead in the top of the fourth on a Jason Colson RBI double off Mark Michael that scored Carlos Duncan and made it 2-1. Duncan had singled and stole second earlier in the inning.

Fargo-Moorhead quickly tied it again in the bottom of the fourth when Hoorelbeke scored on a Kory Wayment triple off Greusel.

Greusel's second start of the season was a good one as he threw just under seven innings, only giving up 5 hits and two runs, he also struck out five batters.

The game remained 2-2 until the bottom of the eighth when reliever Justin Dowdy walked Richard Austin to lead off the inning before retiring two batters and giving way to right-hander Kobayashi. Hoorelbeke gave Kobayashi a rude welcome to the game by drilling a game-winning two-run shot off the Calgary reliever.

Hoorelbeke had a big night for the RedHawks, going 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's.

Calgary couldn't muster up a comeback in the ninth and fell by a score of 4-2.

Carlos Duncan continued to find his game as he went 3-4 on the night with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Adam Shorsher also continued his hot play by picking up a hit in his eleventh straight game.

The Vipers will try to take the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM as they wrap up a short three-game road trip in Fargo. Calgary will return home for the battle of Alberta beginning Monday night at 7:05 PM at Foothills Stadium.
