SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Joliet JackHammers jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Schaumburg Flyers on Saturday night and cruised to a 4-1 victory before 4,609 at Alexian Field.
Joliet scored first in the first inning by pushing two runs across on three hits. With one out, John Lackaff singled and went to second on a single by Chad Ehrnsberger. Bubba Smith walked to load the bases. Jayson Drobiak ripped a two-run double down the left-field line. Lackaff and Ehrnsberger singled for a 2-0 Joliet lead.
In the fifth inning, Joliet scored another run off Schaumburg starter R.J. Swindle. With one out, Chad Ehrnsberger walked and Jayson Drobiak drove him in with a double. The JackHammers had a 3-0 lead after five innings.
In the sixth inning, Joliet added another insurance run when Eddie Romprey hit a two-out single off of Swindle. Romprey went to second base on a single by Mike Goss, and scored on a double by John Lackaff. Lackaff finished the game with a double, a single, an RBI, and a run scored.
Jayson Drobiak went 1-5 with a two-run double to help the lead the JackHammers to their sixth victory of the season and improve 6-15 on the season. Luque (3-0) picked up the win in going six and one-thirds innings and allowing one run on eight hits.
The JackHammers and Flyers finish their four-game series Sunday afternoon at 12:05 at Alexian Field. Pre-game coverage begins at 11:45 on 1340 WJOL.
Loose Gravel: The Joliet JackHammers left-hander Casey Wernke made his professional debut in the seventh inning and allowed a walk to Josue Lopez, the Flyers first baseman. Wernke was signed before the game out of Division II Bellevue University in Bellevue, Nebraska.
