Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
HICKORY, NC - Despite not pitching his best game, Jason Knapp finally got the run support he needed in a 7-4 game on Saturday night. The win is the second for Knapp and the Lakewood BlueClaws erased a 3-0 deficit in beating the Hickory Crawdads in game three of a four-game series.
The Crawdads (11-12) got ahead of the BlueClaws (13-9) with two runs in the first inning, aided by a Jacob Kaase triple and more hot hitting by Michael Bianucci as he singled home Kaase and later scored. The Crawdads added another run in the third to extend their lead before the BlueClaws began their comeback.
With one swing of the bat, the BlueClaws got their first run on a solo home run by Travis Mattair to lead off the fifth inning. Zach Collier then singled and came home on a passed ball to make it a 3-2 game.
In the very next inning, with Crawdad starter Wilmer Font out of the game and Fabio Castillo (0-1) in, the BlueClaws tacked on three more runs to take a lead they would not relinquish. Harold Garcia and Anthony Gose singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second and third before the Crawdads intentionally walked Mattair to load the bases for Collier. Collier singled home a run as did Troy Hanzawa and Collier then came home on a wild pitch. The BlueClaws took a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Crawdads got a run back but the BlueClaws, with the help of a Collier triple in the eighth secured two more runs of insurance and coasted home with a 7-4 lead.
Collier now has multi-hit games in six of his last nine games and has raised his average to .265 from .160. He had three hits in the game, including a triple.
Kanpp (2-2) went 5.1 innings, the least this season and struck out four while allowing four runs. He was relieved by Justin De Fratus who continued to show great control in 1.2 innings. De Fratus has yet to walk a batter this season in 20 innings, he has 22 strikeouts. BJ Rosenberg entered in the eighth for a two-inning save, his third of the season. He recorded four of the six outs with strikeouts.
Font started for the Crawdads and was effective in his five innings, allowing two runs, one earned. This was his longest outing of the season. Castillo came on in the sixth and picked up the loss as he went one inning, allowed four hits and three runs.
The BlueClaws now hold a two-games-to-one advantage in the series that ends on Sunday at 3pm. The BlueClaws will send Heitor Correa (0-0) to the mound on Sunday. Correa was called up from extended spring training to replace Rob Roth who is on the disabled list. Correa did not pitch in 2008 and pitched in 2007 for the GCL Phillies. The Crawdads will counter with lefty Martin Perez (0-2).
