Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV - The Hagerstown Suns scored four times in the first inning of Saturday night's game at Appalachian Power Park to gain an early edge and used the big frame to catapult them to a 6-3 victory over the West Virginia Power.
Derrick Norris hit his second three-run homer of the series in the top of the first inning and Steven Souza capped the four-run frame with a run scoring double. West Virginia plated their first run in the bottom of the first on Jeremy Farrell's RBI groundout. The Power left the bases loaded though, and spoiled an opportunity to close the gap.
Austin McClune scored West Virginia's second run on Erik Huber's second base hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to two. The Suns scored insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to pull away. Jose Lozada's Sacrifice Fly scored Stephen Englund in the eighth inning and the Suns scored their final run on an usual play in the eighth.
With the bases loaded and one out, Ronnie LaBrie hit a ground ball to third base. Jeremy Farrell fielded the ground ball and threw to the ball to second for the first out, but Adenson Chourio lost the ball on the exchange from his glove hand to his throwing hand. Chase D'Arnaud picked up the loose ball and threw out Aaron Seuss at the plate to complete the 5-4-6-2 double play which Norris scored on. The Power scored the last run of the game on Robbie Grossman's RBI single in the ninth.
Marcos Frias (1-1) allowed a pair of runs on six hits over five innings and struck out six batters in a winning effort. Rudy Owens (2-1) was tagged for four runs on three hits in his only inning of work and was tagged with the loss. Owen Brolsma and Kyle McPherson combined to toss six strong innings of relief for the Power, allowing just a run on three hits.
West Virginia fell to 6-17 with the loss, and has lost five in a row while the Suns improved to 9-11 after the victory. Grossman's RBI single in the ninth inning extended his on base streak to 13 games. Erik Huber, Adenson Chourio and Bobby Spain all turned in two-hit performances for the Power. Seven time Major League All-Star and former Pittsburgh Pirate Dave Parker was in attendance for the game.
West Virginia will finish the four game series with the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday afternoon. Right hander Gabriel Alvarado (1-2, 7.27) will start for West Virginia and the Suns will counter with right hander Brad Peacock (0-1, 2.45). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
