Kannapolis Squanders Late Lead against Greensboro

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Despite taking the lead in the seventh inning after trailing for the first six frames, the Kannapolis Intimidators (17-19, 45-49) surrendered two runs in the eighth Saturday night at First National Bank Field to drop game two of the series to the Grasshoppers, 3-2.

The Grasshoppers (19-16, 63-41) got on the board early in the bottom of the first. With two outs, they got back-to-back singles from Ji-Hwan Bae and Fabricio Macias to score Bae and take a 1-0 lead.

Besides that early run, much of this game was a pitcher's duel. Davis Martin pitched one of his best outings of the season. He went six innings, gave up just three hits, one earned run, and struck out seven, while only walking one. Lane Ramsey (L, 3-6) came in for relief.

In the top of the second inning, Kannapolis threatened to score, but other than that, they hadn't generated much offense through the first six innings. In the top of the seventh, that changed. Ian Dawkins hit his team-high 28th double of the season to score both Corey Zangari and Lenyn Sosa to take a 2-1 lead.

Things seemed to be going smooth for the Intimidators until the bottom of the eighth. Ramsey hit the first batter of the inning, Justin Harrer. Harrer advanced to second on a wild pitch, third on a single, and scored on another wild pitch to tie the game, 2-2. Later in the inning, Jack Herman hit a sac fly to score Victor Ngoepe and give Greensboro a 3-2 lead.

Despite Ramon Beltre doubling in the top of the ninth, Kannapolis couldn't manage any more offense and fell Saturday night.

The Intimidators will continue their series with the Grasshoppers Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Taylor Varnell (6-3, 3.13 ERA) will be the starter for Kannapolis, facing William Kobos (0-0, 0.00 ERA) for Greensboro.
