Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators (18-19, 46-59) snapped a three-game skid Sunday afternoon against the Greensboro Grasshoppers (19-17, 63-43) after not only some hot hitting, but a gem from Taylor Varnell (W, 7-3) in an 8-1 win.

The first three innings were scoreless for both sides, but in the top of the fourth, the Intimidators got on the scoreboard. Ramon Beltre singled to score Alex Destino to take a 1-0 lead. Ian Dawkins followed that up with his 29th double of the season, clearing the bases and extending the lead to 4-0.

Greensboro managed to bring one run back in the bottom of the sixth from a Jack Herman solo home run (11).

That would be all the Grasshoppers could manage against Varnell. He went six innings, allowed just three hits, one earned run, and struck out seven, while walking just one. J.B. Olson came in to relieve Varnell.

In the top of the seventh, Alex Destino drove in his team high 52nd run with a single that scored Dawkins to make things 5-1.

Later in the top of the ninth, Dawkins came in to score again on a dropped third strike. The next batter, Romy Gonzalez, doubled and drove in both Lenyn Sosa and Destino to take an 8-1 lead.

Olson and Austin Conway combined to pitch the final three innings, giving up just one hit, and helped guide the Intimidators to the 8-1 victory.

Kannapolis will finish their series with Greensboro Monday night. Jason Bilous (3-6, 3.39 ERA) will take the bump for the Intimidators against Osvaldo Bido (11-5, 3.55 ERA) for the Grasshoppers.
