Nine-Run Frame Sinks Tourists
July 28, 2019 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release
HICKORY - The Asheville Tourists went from being in a great ballgame to on the wrong side of a blowout in only one inning. Asheville led the Hickory Crawdads 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning. The Tourists trailed 9-1 before the fifth frame began. Asheville ended up losing 11-1; their largest loss of the season.
The Tourists looked sharp in all phases early. Despite not scoring in the top of the first, Asheville recorded two hits and two walks in the opening inning. The two teams were scoreless until the Tourists struck in the top of the fourth. Coco Montes hit a leadoff single and Daniel Montano found a gap to score Coco from first base.
The Crawdads tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth. Hickory had two runners aboard with two outs after the sac fly and they went to work. Hickory pounded out hit after hit with a few walks mixed in. The Crawdads ended up tallying eight more runs and led 9-1 after the inning. It is the second biggest inning the Tourists have allowed this season; Delmarva scored ten runs in the third inning against Asheville on April 24.
Hickory added a pair of runs later in the ballgame on another sacrifice fly and a solo Home Run. Asheville only managed one hit over their final five innings; a one-out single by Danny Edgeworth in the sixth inning.
Derrik Watson and Jacob Bosiokovic did a nice job pitching over the final four innings for Asheville. The duo limited the high-powered Crawdads offense to only a few baserunners.
Asheville and Hickory will wrap up their four-game series on Monday night with the first pitch slated for 7:00pm.
