Columbia Fireflies News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - Chase Chambers recorded his third three-hit game of 2019 on Sunday. The Tennessee Tech product singled in three of his four plate appearances in a 5-3 loss to Hagerstown.
Columbia (15-22, 39-64) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The first four Fireflies batters all hit safely to start the frame. Chambers and Mark Vientos each tallied an RBI in the rally. Unfortunately, Jackson Stoeckinger and the rest of the Hagerstown (17-19, 47-59) pitching staff held Columbia scoreless for the remaining eight innings.
Meanwhile, Christian James tossed a gem in his return from the Injured List. The Florida native allowed just one run on two hits in four innings. James could have gone deeper into the ballgame, but a pitch count kept him limited to a shorter outing than normal.
Danny Hrbek took over for James in the fifth. The righty started brilliantly, retiring the first seven hitters he faced out of the pen. A hit-by-pitch and a Phil Caulfield homer (3) later, the game was tied at three.
After evening the score in the seventh, the Suns took the lead in the eighth. With runners at second and third and one out, Israel Pineda singled to left to break the tie. An additional run scored for Hagerstown on a bases-loaded walk by Trey Vickers.
Christian Vann (W, 3-2) and Angel Guillen (S, 5) held the Fireflies hitless over the final three innings. Guillen closed the door by striking out five of the seven batters he faced.
Columbia has now lost five straight and finds itself six games out of first place in the Southern Division standings. With 33 games left to play on the season, each remaining contest holds slightly more weight in its result. A potential playoff push is still on the table for the Fireflies, but time will tell what the destiny of this team is meant to be.
Columbia concludes its homestand with the series finale against Hagerstown on Monday. RHP Bryce Hutchinson (4-5, 3.44) will take the mound looking to avoid a four-game sweep. First pitch is set for 7:05 ET, with coverage beginning at 6:45 ET at FirefliesLiveStream.com and MiLB.TV.
