Augusta GreenJackets News Release
LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY: Nobody is more feared in extra-innings then the 2019 Augusta GreenJackets (57-48, 21-16). They improved to 9-2 in extra-inning games on Sunday afternoon as they beat the Lexington Legends (53-52, 16-20) by a final of 11-10.
The Jackets were down to their last strike in the 9th inning when Frankie Tostado drilled a single to score Simon Whiteman to tie the game. In the 10th inning, Mikey Edie pinch-hit with two outs to break the tie, and then it was Ismael Munguia with a two-RBI single for some much-needed insurance.
It was an early power surge for the GreenJackets offense at Whitaker Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. After the Jackets had just one-run on four hits Saturday, Diego Rincones decided to give the Jackets a 2-0 lead, in the 1st inning, with a two-run shot to left field. It was his 3rd home run of the season, and his 2nd in the month of July. In the 2nd inning, Jeffry Parra hit his 5th home run of the year and the lead was 3-0 GreenJackets.
Lexington had a big answer in the bottom of the 2nd inning. GreenJackets starting pitcher Keith Weisenberg loaded the bases, and it was Rubendy Jaquez for Lexington who cleared them. A double for Jaquez tied the score at three. Later in the inning, with Jaquez on 3rd base, John Rave smacked a sacrifice fly, and Lexington pulled in front at 4-3.
The Augusta offense scratched two runs across in the 5th inning. On a sacrifice bunt for Simon Whiteman, with Tyler Flores on 3rd base and Ismael Munguia on 1st base, Flores scored from 3rd, and the Jackets tied the score at four. Jacob Gonzalez singled later in the inning and the Jackets brought home another run to take a 5-4 lead.
Augusta grabbed two runs in the 7th inning to extend their lead. The first scored on an error from the shortstop Rubendy Jaquez, as Whiteman scored from 2nd base to give the Jackets a 6-4 lead. Frankie Tostado later scored in the frame on a wild pitch, and the Jackets led comfortably at 7-4.
In the home-half of the 8th inning though, Nate Eaton changed the game with one swing of the bat. A grand slam for Eaton gave Lexington the 8-7 advantage. It was the 2nd consecutive day Lexington hit a grand slam.
The Jackets trailed 8-7 heading to the 9th inning. An infield hit with one-out got Whiteman aboard. Frankie Tostado came up, and with two outs and two strikes, the game was on the line. Tostado singled and Whiteman scored to tie the game.
We'd go to the 10th inning, and the GreenJackets were on the verge of not scoring. Mikey Edie came off the Jackets bench with a pinch-hit single to give Augusta the 9-8 lead. Then Munguia bounced one through the left side of the infield, and the GreenJackets led comfortably, yet again, at 11-8.
Lexington would not go quietly though. In the 10th inning, the Legends scored two runs, and had the tying run aboard. Sandro Cabrera came into the game to get the last out, and he'd strikeout Rudy Martin to give the GreenJackets an 11-10 victory.
Player of the Game: Simon Whiteman, 2-5, 2 R, RBI
There were contributions up and down the Augusta lineup, but Whiteman seemed to be right in the middle of everything. He got on base in the 9th inning, and Tostado eventually drove him home to tie the game and get it to extra-innings.
Tomorrow's Game: 2:05 PM @ Lexington Legends (Kansas City Royals), Whitaker Bank Ballpark, Lexington, Kentucky
Pitching Matchup: (LEX) RHP C.J. Eldred (0-3, 6.56 ERA) vs (AUG) LHP Seth Corry (7-2, 1.97 ERA)
Seth Corry takes the mound in the series finale with Lexington, and the southpaw has been arguably the best pitcher in the South Atlantic League in the 2nd half of the season. Since the All-Star Break, Corry is 6-0 with a 0.96 ERA and he has gone at least five innings in six of his seven starts. Corry was a South Atlantic League All-Star for the GreenJackets, and he leads the team with 119 strikeouts over 86.2 innings on the mound this year. He was a 3rd round pick by the San Francisco Giants in the 2017 MLB Draft, and he is listed as the #25 overall prospect in the San Francisco Giants organization according to MLB.com
C.J. Eldred makes the start for Lexington on Monday evening, and it will be just the 2nd start of the season for him. Eldred has appeared in 17 games this year, but only one has been a start. Eldred has faced the Jackets three times out of the Lexington bullpen in 2019, and in his last appearance on June 30th at SRP Park, the Jackets tagged him for six runs in just two innings. Eldred had pitched a total of four innings against Augusta before that outing, and had allowed only one run in those two appearances. Eldred was signed as a Free Agent in 2017 by the Kansas City Royals. He played his college baseball at the University of Iowa.
