Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA-On a night where the team raised awareness for the fight against Breast Cancer, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, battled back in the bottom of the eighth to beat the River City Rascals 3-2 Saturday at CONSOL Energy Park.

Washington reliever Matt Purnell earned the win and improved his record to 4-1 while Rascals pitcher Nick Kennedy took the loss. Closer Jonathan Kountis earned his franchise-record 20th save of the season.

In a tight pitchers' duel through five innings, catcher Jim Vahalik finally broke the scoreless tie as he ripped an RBI single to score infielder Carter Bell and put Washington in front 1-0.

The Rascals knotted the game at one in the top of the eighth but then jumped ahead of the Wild Things with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch, 2-1. However, the Rascals lead would not last long as back-to-back singles by outfielder Daniel Poma and infielder Garrett Rau fueled a comeback. A passed ball put runners on second and third for Wild Things hitter CJ Beatty. An RBI groundout by Beatty tied the game at two.

Down to the final strike and out in the eighth inning, Kalamar delivered the game-winning RBI single to secure the Wild Things 34th victory of the season.

The Washington Wild Things will play the last game of the series against the River City Rascals tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. For tickets, call 724-250-9555, visit the CONSOL Energy Park Box Office or log onto www.washingtonwildthings.com.
