NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, trailed for the entire contest and lost their fourth straight game, 8-6 to the Frontier Greys on Saturday night at the Corn Crib.
The Greys struck first for the second straight night with a big third inning, beginning with four consecutive hits and scoring four runs with a Chase Tucker single, RBI triples from Cameron Monger and Chris Ellison and a two-run homer off the center field batter's eye by Joe Rapp for a 4-0 lead. Monger hit his second triple of the game, a two-run drive to the right field corner, to push the Greys' lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning.
The Belters broke through in their fourth frame with three straight one-out singles from Sam Judah, Aaron Dudley and Richard Lucas with two runs coming home on the Lucas hit to cut the deficit to 6-2. Another big inning in the fifth cut the margin to 6-5 thanks to a three-run homer just over the right field fence by Judah, plating Eric Anderson and Santiago Chirino after both reached via singles.
The Greys edged back to a 7-5 lead in the seventh when Ellison led off with his second triple of the night, the fourth three-bagger for the guests, then scored on a wild pitch. Consecutive two-out singles in the frame by Jon Minucci and Frank Florio gave the Greys an 8-5 advantage.
The Belters used a lead-off double in the ninth from Pat McKenna and an RBI single from Chirino with two outs for the final tally.
Clint Wright (4-5) worked six innings for the win, giving up five runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Kurt Schluter (0-1) gave up six runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in his four innings for the loss. Jarrett Leverett worked the ninth for his third save.
