River City Rascals News Release
River City loses game one of the second half of their Frontier League schedule 6-1 as they commit three errors and muster only five hits against the East Division's number-one team, the Washington Wild Things.
In the first game following the restful All-Star break, Brook and the Raskies sent veteran starter, Tommy Mendoza, to the bump to oppose Scott Dunn, of the East's leading team, the Washington Wild Things.
After a one-two-three top of the first at Consol Energy Park in Washington, Pennsylvania, the Wild Things pushed an early run across the plate on a two-out RBI double by Scott Kalamar- making it 1-0 after one in Washington. The Rascals could not answer however, in the top of the second, which allowed the Wild Things to triple their lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, two-RBI double by shortstop Garrett Rau- pushing the lead to 3-0 Washington after two.
While the Rascals' offense did continue to struggle- not scoring a run through the first five- starter Tommy Mendoza really settled down, as he retired ten straight batters following the two-RBI double in the second. As far as offense went, the River City hitters would strand a runner aboard in five straight innings, as they were held scoreless through six at the plate.
Washington would then add two more runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a pass ball and a balk- making it 5-0 Wild Things. Mendoza's night would then come to an end after six, as he allowed five runs- four earned- through six on six hits while striking out six and walking only two.
Scott Dunn's night would also come to a conclusion after six, where he allowed no runs of any kind on four hits while striking out two and walking none. Even with a five-run lead, the Wild Things were able to tack on yet another insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a stolen-base and error by rookie third-baseman Tyler Zupcic- making it 6-0 Washington after seven at Consol Energy Park.
The Raskies were finally able to put one run on the board in the top of the eighth on a bases-loaded double-play grounded into by Josh Ludy, cutting the lead to five after seven and a half. Heading into the ninth, River City trailed 6-1 as reliever Tyler Elrod came in to shut the door. The win therefore, went to Washington starter Scott Dunn with the loss going to veteran right-hander Tommy Mendoza.
