Grizzlies Enjoy Record-Breaking Night in Win at Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Gateway Grizzlies recorded a franchise-record 26 hits in an 18-4 thrashing of the Traverse City Beach Bums Saturday night at Wuerfel Park.

The 26 hits were the most for the Grizzlies since July 8, 2007 at Windy City. The win gave the Grizzlies their 12th series win and pushed their lead in the West Division to two games over River City.

Seven players recorded three hits or more with Ben Waldrip and Richard Seigel both notching four hits. Seven different players also recorded two runs or more. Waldrip and Seigel both drove in four runs while Michael Wing brought in a team-high five runs.

Gateway (35-19) jumped out to an early 12-0 lead with two runs in the first inning, four each in the second and third and two more runs in the fourth.

Wing brought in a run on a double and Waldrip drove in his first of four runs on a single to give Gateway a 2-0 first inning lead.

Landon Hernandez picked up his second two-run single of the series while Wing and TJ Bennett added RBI singles to make the lead 6-0 after two innings.

Gateway scored four more runs in the third inning on a Wing three-run home run and a Madison Beaird RBI single.

Seigel extended the lead to 12-0 with a fourth inning two-run home run.

Traverse City (21-32) collected their first run of the game in the fourth inning and added three more in the sixth inning after a Michael Johnson RBI single.

Gateway finished off the scoring with two runs in the seventh inning on a Seigel two-run double and three runs in the eighth inning on a Waldrip three-run home run.

Aaron Newcomb (8-2) got the win, earning his 8th of the year, to become the league's first eight-game winner. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed 10 hits and four runs in five and a third innings.

Gateway will look for the series sweep Sunday at Traverse City. Right-hander Tucker Jensen (5-2) gets the start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 4:05 central time.
