Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release

Canada Soccer announced on Wednesday that Whitecaps FC 2 right back Kadin Chung and U-18 Residency goalkeeper Thomas Hasal have been called up to Canada's men's U-20 national team for a 10-day camp in Canada and Panama.

The squad features 24 players as Canada prepares for the upcoming CONCACAF Men's U-20 Championship in February. The camp will run from January 12 to 22 with international away friendlies against Panama on January 19 and 21. Of the 24 players in Toronto, only 20 will travel to Panama for the two matches.

"This camp gives us another chance to expose our players to the environment that we expect to face in qualifying," said Rob Gale, Canada Soccer's men's U-20 national team coach. "This is a chance to play a very good opponent ahead of qualifying, but also a chance to see our players and continue our assessment ahead of our squad selection in February."

Chung was most recently called up to the U-20 side in November for a 10-day camp in the United States and Honduras, which included a pair of friendlies against the Central American nation. The 18-year-old from Port Coquitlam was also called up to Canada's U-20s for friendlies in Costa Rica in August, and scored in a 2-1 friendly win over England's U-20 team in March.

Hasal earns his first call-up to the U-20 team after previously being called up to the U-18 national team in October. The native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and product of the Whitecaps FC Saskatchewan Academy started in one of two matches against El Salvador in Toronto, saving a penalty kick in a 2-2 draw.

The CONCACAF Men's U-20 Championship runs February 17 to March 6 in San José, Costa Rica. Canada's initial group opponents are Honduras (February 17), Mexico (February 20), and Antigua & Barbuda (February 23). From the tournament, four nations will qualify for the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea Republic, which runs May 20 to June 11.

For the January camp, Canada's squad predominantly features players from clubs in out-of-season leagues in North America. Players from Canadian MLS clubs in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montréal are included in the squad. A few players from youth clubs in Europe were also made available for the January camp.

Two players unavailable through injury are goalkeepers Philip Di Bennardo and James Pantemis.

In between the January camp in Panama and the CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship in Costa Rica, Canada Soccer's men's U-20 national team will have one more preparation camp in Mexico from January 27 to February 4.
