
Toronto FC Sign Sergio Camargo

Toronto FC announced Wednesday that the club has signed midfielder Sergio Camargo as a Home Grown Player. He becomes the 13th player in club history to sign for the first team from the Kia Toronto FC Academy. The club has signed a total of 24 Kia Toronto FC Academy players to professional contracts for both Toronto FC and Toronto FC II.
"We are very excited to sign Sergio, another Canadian home grown player", said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. "During his time in our academy, NCAA and PDL, Sergio has progressed and grown his game on a number of levels. We look forward to welcoming Sergio back to Toronto FC and watch his continued development as a professional soccer player."
Camargo, 22, split time between Coastal Carolina University and Syracuse University. In three seasons (2013 - 2015) with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, he appeared in 58 career matches, registering 19 goals and 15 assists. He was named 2015 All-Big South Second Team, 2014 All-Big South Honorable Mention, 2014 Big South All-Tournament team, 2013 Big South All-Freshman team, 2013 CollegeSportsMadness.com Second Team All-Big South, 2013 TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 100 Freshman (No. 54). He then transferred to Syracuse University for the 2016 season and appeared in 17 matches registering four goals and three assists for the Orange.
Camargo originally joined the Kia Toronto FC Academy in November 2009. He appeared in a friendly match for Toronto FC against Liverpool in the 2012 World Football Challenge. During the 2015 season, while playing with Kitchener-Waterloo United Football Club (K-W United FC) of the USL Premier Development League (PDL), he captained the team and helped the club finish second place in the Great Lakes Division and captured the 2015 PDL North American Championship during the playoffs.
Camargo was 15 years old when he made his debut for the Canadian youth program in 2010 with coach Sean Fleming. He has represented the Canadian Men's national team at the U-17 and U-20 levels. He was a member of the Canadian squad during the 2011 U-17 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.
